Tackling in football can be an intimidating experience for both young players and their parents. The sight of a child throwing themselves at a larger opponent running at full speed is enough to make any parent nervous. At TackleSmart Sports, we understand these concerns deeply. That’s why we’ve dedicated ourselves to developing programs that teach safe, effective tackling techniques for players at every level, from beginners to those looking to refine their skills.
One of the best ways to build confident, safe tacklers is through participation in complementary sports. Wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu are particularly valuable as they teach power, leverage, and body control – skills that translate directly to proper football tackling. These martial arts emphasize techniques like the double-leg takedown, which mirrors a perfect football tackle. Rugby is another excellent option, especially for players who tend to lead with their helmet. Since rugby is played without helmets, it naturally teaches players to keep their heads up and use proper shoulder-first tackling techniques. The wrap-and-drive method used in rugby is one of the safest ways to bring down an opponent and can significantly improve a player’s football tackling ability.
The fundamentals of tackling have evolved significantly in recent years. Gone are the days when players were taught to lead with their heads – a dangerous technique that put them at serious risk of injury. Today, the shoulder-first approach is recognized as the safest and most effective method. This technique keeps the head out of contact while allowing players to use their strongest muscles to make solid tackles. It works equally well for front-on, side-on, and open-field situations. Parents and coaches can help players practice this by using padded mats or tackling dummies, focusing on driving the shoulder into the opponent’s hips or thighs while keeping the head up and eyes on the target at all times.
For smaller players, proper pad level can be the great equalizer. The old adage “low man wins” holds true in football tackling. Teaching players to bend at the knees rather than the waist, maintain a flat back, and keep their eyes up gives them a significant advantage regardless of their size. The power for an effective tackle comes from exploding through the hips with leg drive, not from arm strength alone. When mastered, these techniques can turn even the smallest players into reliable tackling machines that coaches can count on in crucial game situations.
At TackleSmart Sports, we bring more than 30 years of coaching experience to our programs. Our approach combines the best techniques from both football and rugby, backed by scientific research into player safety. We offer progressive training programs that build skills and confidence gradually, with coaching available nationwide through our North Texas hubs. We’re passionate about making football safer while maintaining the competitive spirit of the game.
Parents should be cautious of programs offering quick certifications without proper credentials. Not all tackling instruction is created equal, and it’s important to verify the experience and methodology behind any training program. At TackleSmart, we pride ourselves on transparency and evidence-based coaching methods that prioritize player safety above all else.
We invite parents and coaches to join the TackleSmart Sports community to stay updated on the latest in safe tackling techniques, training tips, and upcoming camp opportunities. With the right approach, tackling doesn’t have to be scary – it can be taught in a way that keeps players safe while allowing them to perform at their best. By focusing on proper technique, cross-training opportunities, and expert coaching, we can help young athletes play hard, play safe, and play with confidence.
